Zonta Peel members hold their Local Legend award with Mayor Rhys Williams in centre

The Zonta Club of Peel has been named Mandurah’s newest Local Legends, with members recognised for their dedication to enhancing the lives of women and girls in the local area.

Mayor Rhys Williams presented the award late last month, highlighting the group’s efforts towards empowering women in the Mandurah community and wider Peel area for more than 30 years.

Mayor Williams said the community spirit and compassion shown by the Zonta Club of Peel was remarkable, and well deserving of Local Legend status.

“From providing scholarships and supporting local women’s shelters to organising events that raise awareness about domestic violence and gender equality, our local Zonta Club works so hard to champion women and girls,” Mayor Williams said.

“Zonta members frequently collaborate with other community organisations to drive social change and create a supportive environment for all women, and we are so thankful to them. We are incredibly fortunate to have such an amazing group of volunteers who dedicate their lives to making Mandurah a better place.”

Each year since 2006, the Peel group hosts a Missing Persons Memorial Service to remember people in the community who have gone missing and never returned, and to offer support to their loved ones. Mandurah is home to the only missing person’s memorial in the state.

The Zonta Club of Peel is a proud leader in the community in addressing family domestic violence issues, advocating for change and awareness through various activism events throughout the year including the Mandurah Silent March.

Over decades of supporting both local and international communities, the Peel group has prepared more than 60,000 birthing kits to support a clean birth for those in need in developing countries and assembled close to 4000 breast care cushions for people in the post-operative phase of breast surgery. Zonta Golf Days have also raised more than $300,000 in 30 years for Breast Cancer Research at the University of Western Australia.
